Can a toy robot teach kids computer programming?

Veterans from Apple and Google launch a crowdfunding campaign to find out

Veterans from Apple and Google launch a crowdfunding campaign to find out the verge

In late 2012, Vikas Gupta left his job as head of the consumer payments division at Google and set out to discover what he would do with the rest of his life. He’d recently had a daughter, and he knew his next venture would involve helping kids. Then he chanced across an article about Estonia, and how that country begins teaching programming to all children in first grade. He did a little research into the state of computer science education in America and was shocked to find how rare it was. So he set out to create a compelling way for children as young as four or five to start learning basic coding concepts.

Create your own story on sStory

The goal is to make responsive magazine feature style mini-sites as easily as possible.

Sstory

The sStory component is a story viewer that displays the text of stories and tagged entities and concepts. Each story is related to “is-about” concepts, related named entities and other related stories. Each “is-about” concept and named entity found in the story is tagged by a GATE process pipeline. Normally this tagging is performed using the currently active domain ontology and dictionaries of named entities that are most likely to be part of these stories.
Related concepts and named entities can be highlighted in the story’s text and related stories can be explored. A search feature has been implemented in the component, along with a full-screen mode. However, due to full-screen limitations in Flex, the search feature is disabled in full-screen mode.

Growing Up with Gadgets – Web Documentary

Where are you going!? What’s going to be the consequences?!

Growing Up with Gadgets-USA-zgenesis

Modern technology is often blamed for a wide range of learning problems in today’s children. But are modern gadgets themselves at fault, or is it simply the way they are being used that needs to be addressed?

Teacher Meggen calls out, “you want to move on to the iPods?”. A chorus of young voices respond: “Yeah!” Meggen runs a thoroughly modern classroom, integrating technology with tradition. According to professor Nick Lux, “it provides a rich learning experience, that’s more accessible for all the students in a classroom”. It may also be the only way to reach the distracted minds of modern youth.

The power of online video

Our brains are “exquisitely wired” for the medium of video, Anderson says. And the potential reach is enormous. “Today, one person speaking can be seen by millions.”

Chris Anderson-Zgenesis

The rise of face-to-face communication
Toward the end of his talk, Chris speaks to the power of face-to-face communication and presentation. As he says, information often can be taken in faster by reading it. But there is a necessary depth and richness that is often missing. Part of the effectiveness of a presentation is the visual impact and the show and tell aspect of it, but there is more to it than that. “There’s a lot more being transferred than just words. It is in that nonverbal portion that there’s some serious magic. Somewhere hidden in the physical gestures, the vocal cadence, the facial expressions, the eye contact, the passion, and the kind of awkward British body language, the sense of how the audience are reacting…. There are hundreds of subconscious clues that go to how well you will understand and whether you are inspired.”

Teaching for Tomorrow: Flipped Learning

Applying what you learned at home in the classroom

Teaching for Tomorrow- Flipped Learning-zgenesis-2

Teaching for Tomorrow- Flipped Learning-zgenesis-1

How students are learning is changing, just ask Aaron Sams, a Flipped Learning Pioneer. In Flipped Learning, students watch podcasts of their teacher’s lectures on their own time and then spend their time in the classroom applying what they learned at home. This allows students to learn at their own pace with the ability to pause, rewind, or watch the lecture and instructions as many times as they want.
